7 BEST Outdoor Metal Rabbit Runs For Any Budget

What is the best outdoor rabbit run?

A rabbit hutch AND run is an absolute must for your bunny. They shouldn’t be confined to their hutch, especially if you only have a small rabbit hutch.

When we first got our rabbits we had a cheap metal rabbit run on the side of their hutch. It worked well, allowing them to have the safety and shelter of a hutch, with the added space of the rabbit run to run and leap about some more.

Then I built a slightly larger but much strong hutch with run using scrap materials (wood and chicken wire) – that’s it pictured above, and I’m not great at DIY!

After a while, we upgraded them to an even larger, stronger, and all-around better metal rabbit run that gave them even more space and protection. We definitely noticed a positive change in their attitude and behavior immediately!

If you need a rabbit run for your pets, here are some good options.

When looking for a good rabbit run for your pet, you need to keep the following things in mind:

  • How much space do you need?
  • How high can your bunny jump?
  • Do you have flying predators in your area and need a covered rabbit run?

As already mentioned, rabbit runs are often used in combination with a rabbit hutch.

If you also require a hutch we have a few articles with recommendations:

Here are our top picks for outdoor rabbit enclosures.

1. BestPet Rabbit Cage Enclosure

best metal run

The BestPet Rabbit Run is the ultimate metal rabbit run. Look at it!

This is a fully enclosed bunny run that makes it safe to leave your animal.

They will be safe from most rabbit predators – hawks, cats, and dogs (though a determined dog may be able to break in).

This run is larger than most, measuring:

  • Length: 86 inches (2.2 meters)
  • Width: 40 inches (1 meter)
  • Height: 40 inches in the middle (1 meter)

The run is made from powder-coated steel wire and comes with a polyester shade cover that can be attached over a portion of the top. There are doors on both sides of the run, and one at one of the ends.

If you were considering attaching this run to your hutch, you can line up one of these doors with the opening of the hutch.

It is a large sturdy run, suitable for large rabbit breeds like Flemish Giants. Your rabbits will love this cage and, if they’re anything like mine, will be hopping and spinning with joy for the extra space.

2. BestPet Outdoor Rabbit Enclosure

bunny run

Here is another, slightly cheaper rabbit run from BestPet.

As you can see, it is a square-shaped rabbit run, rather than the rectangular one above.

It does not have a pointed roof (which tends to be a stronger roof), but this is still a reasonably sound enclosure.

The dimensions of this run are:

  • Length: 72 inches (1.82 meters)
  • Width: 48 inches (1.21 meters)
  • Height: 24 inches (61 cm)

This run can be erected and dismantled quickly and easily, without the use of any tools. This is a great feature as you’ll need to move it around your yard as your bunnies eat all the grass and/or soil the ground too much.

You might also need to move your run around depending on the time of the year. I know that my bunnies need a lot more shelter in the summer, and more sun in the winter.

This hutch also comes with a green polyester cover to provide some shelter from the sun and rain, but to be honest, it’s best if you can attach a hutch up to the door. This run is a good size for most rabbits and is certain to provide them with plenty of space to exercise.

3. Cheap Rabbit Run With Door

This Paws & Pals rabbit exercise pen is another great option for your bunny.

This is a basic 8-paneled structure with no roof. It comes in a range of heights, so choose the height that best suits your rabbit. Find out how high your bunny can jump and select the appropriate run.

The range of heights includes:

  • 24 inches (60 cm)
  • 30 inches (76 cm)
  • 42 inches (106 cm)
  • 48 inches (121 cm)

I have one of these rabbit enclosures, and I can tell you that it is very easy to set up and dismantle. It is easy to shift around your backyard to fresh grass.

The only downside is that it is only a small area. I use it in conjunction with my large rabbit hutch, attaching two of the sides with a small piece of wire. This creates a slightly larger area.

This run is made from durable metal and is resistant to rust. Mine has kept in good condition for 3 or 4 years now.

4. Tespo Metal Rabbit Playpen

best rabbit playpen

This Tespo Playpen is a good option if you need an indoor rabbit run.

If you’re getting sick of your house rabbit chewing cords and furniture, this might be the answer.  This is another metal rabbit run in which your small rabbit will be safe and secure.

It can also be used outdoors, but the sides are not very high and it is possible your rabbit will learn to jump out. This would make a good run for baby rabbits if you have some breeding bunnies.

Each panel measures 14 x 14 inches. Approximate dimensions of this pet pen are:

  • Length: 42 inches (107 cm)
  • Width: 28 inches (72 cm)
  • Height: 14 inches (36 cm)

Like all the runs above, this is simple to set up and takedown. It is rust-resistant and washable. Make this run larger by buying two or more sets. Join one set to another to double the area.

5. Rugged Ranch Extra Large Rabbit Run

diy rabbit run

If you can afford it, this Rugged Ranch Walk-In Bunny Run is amazing!

It is a large small animal enclosure, and it can be extended to twice the size by purchasing two sets.

Make sure you check out the other photos in the listing as that helps to get perspective. It is high enough for an adult to stand up in, but you can certainly crawl around on your knees!

The dimensions of this big bunny run are:

  • Length: 96 inches (2.4 meters)
  • Width: 84 inches (2.13 meters)
  • Height: 48 inches (1.21 meters)

This pen is very strong and durable and has been finished with a powder coat. The roof cover is safe and sturdy. You are able to remove one of the side panels to insert a rabbit hutch or other bedding area for your bunny.

Buying An Outdoor Rabbit Enclosure

extra large outdoor rabbit hutch

When looking for an outdoor metal rabbit run, there are a few key things to consider…

Size:

Make sure the run is large enough for your rabbit to move around comfortably, with room for a hiding spot, food and water dishes, and a place to rest.

A rabbit run with a hutch can also be a very good place to hide a spare house key. We did it for years (but no longer, so don’t look there!) and it worked well. It’s the last place anyone would think to look!

Durability:

Look for a run made from sturdy metal that can withstand the elements and won’t rust or corrode over time.

Some runs can be quite flimsy to the point where a strong gust of wind could blow them over. Avoid this type unless it’s all your budget allows, but monitor closely.

Safety:

Make sure the run has secure doors and no sharp edges or areas where your rabbit could get caught or injured.

Because we have young children, we also lock the rabbit hutch because they’re likely to try and open the door from time to time. A semi-complicated locking mechanism keeps both animals and kids out!

Weather protection:

A run with a roof or cover will protect your rabbit from the sun, rain, and wind.

While I was using my DIY hutch and run I would put a heavy tarpaulin over the top in hot or wet weather.

Easy to clean:

Look for a run that is easy to clean and maintain, with removable trays or floors that can be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

Ventilation:

The run should have good ventilation to keep your rabbit cool in the summer and prevent the buildup of harmful gases.

Easy to move:

If you need to move the run around your yard, consider a run with wheels or a lightweight design.

That was where I failed in my design. It was too heavy and difficult to move!

Make sure the wire spacing is not too wide, as it will prevent predators like foxes and raccoons from getting through.

Best Outdoor Rabbit Run

Thanks for taking a look at these rabbit cage reviews.

Always factor in the specific predators in your area when making a buying decision. In some countries foxes, bears, and raccoons are not a problem. In other parts, snakes might be the biggest issue.

Always aim to find something that’s both large enough for your rabbit to exercise and strong enough to withstand weather and predators.

Our favorite option is a walk-in rabbit run as it allows you to spend more quality time with your pet. Also, if you have children, it makes it so much easier for them to play with the bunnies.

The PawHut Galvanized Metal Run is extra large, well protected, and it’s 6.5 feet high – perfect for most adults and children.

Hopefully, this helps you to get a good idea of the options and we trust your bunny, whatever its breed, will enjoy its new home.

  1. Hey mate, appreciate the help on this. I’ve gone for the Rugged Ranch run. It looks like the strongest and best metal rabbit run on the list to me. How many rabbits would you keep in it?

    • No problem James. If it were me I’d keep up to four bunnies, with an attached hutch, in this run. It really depends on how well they all get along together though. Hope your rabbits absolutely love it – send us some pics when it’s all set up!

  2. Thank you for your help. The rabbit run has come in and looks amazing. It’s just what I was looking for. Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter (four of my bunnies) do absolutely love it! I can go in with them and play with them and be sure that they are safe from overhead predators and dogs etc. jumping in while I am out. Thanks again – will email some pics through.
